Battlefield 2042 introduces a non-binary character for the first time in the series.

Battlefield 2042 does not have a traditional campaign mode. Hence, it is unlikely that Sundance’s gender identity or the fact they are Black will significantly impact their combat skills. I think most players won’t find out this information about their character unless they search for it on the internet. This reinforces the fact that identity is often an afterthought in games of this size.

Apex Legends is EA’s second shooter, with a diverse roster, but this information is not included in its official materials. Apex Legends’ only non-binary character, Bloodhound, has a bio page that does not use the pronoun ‘they’ to describe them. Still, it doesn’t provide any other information about this character. EA often confirms these character traits via external channels such as social media and specifically to the press. Ubisoft recently made the first trans Rainbow Six Siege character public via her bio.

This is a small step in the right direction for blockbuster shooters. However, it’s an improvement on having a large cast of characters without any image to reflect the diverse audiences who play these games. Battlefield 2042 is aware of this and has done something to represent them.
