A pair of wooden sticks is outclassing many of the guns in Call of Duty: Warzone. Kali Sticks is a melee weapon that occupies your secondary slot. While they may sound like a fashionable replacement for Call of Duty’s standard knife attacks, these flute-shaped whacking toys should be feared. If you step within their 3-meter range, a few swings can kill you quicker than any machine gun.
There are many complaints about the Kali Sticks’ unnatural power. Every time I visit Warzone’s official subreddit I see at most one new post about how powerful they are. But that’s what makes them special–the Kali Sticks have never been nerfed.
Since their addition in June 2020, they have remained relatively unchanged in Warzone Season 4 (not confused with Warzone’s second Season 4 starting in 2021 and its third Season 4 beginning in 2022).
Why are Kali Sticks so powerful? One, Kali Sticks can have a light lock-on feature that makes them easier to use. The Kali Sticks will “stick” to targets if you are within 3 meters of them when you start a combo. It takes less than one second to kill an enemy with full health. Kali weapons are different from melee weapons in that they can swing quicker than other melee weapons and deal a lot more damage per hit. This gives it a high DPS. The Kalis’ damage is largely caused by a single critical strike. If the crit hits, it ends the fight.
It is a horrible experience to be on the receiving end of Kali Sticks barrage. It’s disorienting to be beaten by someone who is walking around you within a 2-foot radius. This is especially true for console gamers who are unable to increase their FOV to improve their peripheral vision. The Kalis will kill your target faster than any other gun in the game, so it doesn’t really matter if you stay on target.
High damage output from the Kali makes it frustrating for players. They must either kill the Kali wielder before getting close enough to end it or take out their own pair to make it a stick-on-stick fight.
The unrest surrounding Kali Sticks is quieter than Warzone’s past instances overpowered shenanigans. However, frustrations are on the rise as the Kalis have proved to be excellent ghostbusters for Warzone’s Halloween mode. This is certainly not as significant as the DMR-14 nerfing scandal of early 2021. After all, the Kalis are secondary melee weapons and most fights in Warzone take place at medium-long distances. However, at close range, one slippery Kali user could wipe the floor with multiple fully-kitted operators. This is probably not the case.
The melee weapons that Warzone has added to its arsenal, including a katana and a baseball bat, are mostly considered a novelty. It is more practical to use your secondary slot for a reliable SMG/sniper rifle that matches your loadout. The Kali Sticks are unreasonably powerful and lack any counterplay.
Raven Software, a developer, will likely provide a nerf in an update if the complaints continue to mount. It could be part of December’s Vanguard Season One. This will merge Vanguard with Warzone and introduce Caldera.
