Leo DiCaprio Was Responsible For Don’t Look Up’s Devastating Last Line.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the director of Don’t Lookup and Jennifer Lawrence. The film’s last line was a departure from the original script. Don’t Look Up was a Netflix original released in December 2021. It quickly became one of the streaming service’s most popular releases. This is due to the star-studded cast.

Don’t Look Up is a Hollywood veteran Adam McKay. His previous works include the Academy Award-nominated Vice and The Big Short. The director is known for his comedy and satire, and Don’t Lookup continues that tradition. Two low-level astronomers discover a comet that is on its way to Earth. DiCaprio and Lawrence play the two astronomers. They attempt to initiate a political response but run into unexpected obstacles. The film depicts the impending comet impact metaphorically for climate change and society’s inability to deal with it. Don’t Lookup examines humanity’s inability to understand existential risks and how misinformation can fuel and support political tribalism.

McKay has shared some behind-the-scenes details about the film’s production in an interview with the magazine. McKay discusses how the actors modified the script and clarify that this was a team effort. After saying that the original line was not powerful enough, DiCaprio came up with the closing line for the film. You can read McKay’s complete comments below.

It’s true, that line at the movie’s end where he said, “We really had [everything], didn’t we?” That wasn’t written in the script. That was his first appearance on the set of filming. Leo was the one who encouraged us to add the line during the edit. It was devastating. We had to find the right balance for that ending. It’s important not to shock the audience but to make it impactful. We didn’t have this line in, and we are now nearing the end. There is not much time left. Leo was also there and suggested that we try the line. It was mighty and felt great when we did it. It was a little scary to use, so we just put it in front of a screening. Leo encouraged me to do that, and I was grateful. This is the actual line from the movie. Jen said, “Well, we tried.” Leo was the one who said, “No, it feels as if it needs to be another.” He didn’t just think of it. He came into the edit to tell us to give it a try.

The film’s fans, as well as DiCaprio, are sure to be interested in learning more about the decision-making process behind the camera. Improvisation is a common feature under certain directors. Actors will often add or change small parts to a script depending on how they feel their characters behave. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that DiCaprio could write the film’s last line. This is because memorable lines are essential. The bar is a success, and DiCaprio’s performance is outstanding. He has been nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards.

Fans will be watching to see if Don’t Look Up can turn its numerous nominations into wins, given the success of Don’t Lookup. Don’t Lookup received nominations in many categories at the Golden Globes. However, it did not win any awards. The cast is also in contention for the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ top prize. Fans will likely be focusing on McKay’s next project and DiCaprio’s next one because the film’s ending rules out any Don’t Look Up sequel.
