This week, it was announced that Amazon Studios is “nearing” a deal to create a new series inspired by EA’s Mass Effect games. Although no details beyond the “maybe it’s happening report” have been revealed, the mere existence was enough to draw the attention of some former developers.

Interestingly, David Gaider, a long-time BioWare writer and lead writer for the Dragon Age series, was the first to respond. He said that the idea of the show makes “cringe just slightly.”

“I and DA each have a unique protagonist. Gaider explained that the TV show would have to choose whether or not said protagonist will be male. “Boom! You’ve just alienated a lot of your existing fan base, who had high hopes.

“Secondly, these protagonists are intended to be a little bit of a blank canvas, which the player can fill out with their choices. This is not going to work if the medium is passive. The protagonist will suddenly have their personality…and their own story. It will be strange.”

Gaider pointed out that Shepard can be “pretty boring” by themselves and that most of Mass Effect’s emotional engagement is gained through their companions. There’s no way to include all of them equally in a TV show. This means that some fans, such as Zaeed Massani (the coolest man in space), will be disappointed. Even though there are more supporting characters, the show will have to focus on just a few of them—as the games do—to “maintain coherence.

Gaider suggested that instead of adapting the games directly, creating a new Mass Effect story would be better. Later, he clarified that he wasn’t suggesting that he dislikes the idea for a Mass Effect series. “Just that it faces some major challenges.”

Several other ex-developers were optimistic about the show’s prospects. Drew Karpyshyn (the lead writer for the Mass Effect 2 games and author of three Mass Effect novels) stated on Twitter that he is not involved in the project but would love to: “Happy to consult with them if they need my input,” he wrote. Although I am not involved in the project, I look forward to it. If they need my input, I’m happy to assist.

Gaider’s points seem valid to me, even though producers might be wary of straying too far away from the original trilogy following the destruction of Mass Effect: Andromeda. However, there is still a lot of interest in the series. BioWare may be able to offer more tie-in storytelling possibilities than Shepard’s ending saga.

What if Henry Cavill is involved? That is something we are very interested in.
